Case study: solving WooCommerce pre-order and template migration challenges

When launching new WooCommerce products, especially with custom templates and pre-order functionality, technical roadblocks can easily delay a release. Our team recently helped a client resolve a complex set of issues around moving new product pages from staging to live, setting up pre-orders, and troubleshooting plugin limitations.

Issue Background

The client needed to launch new products on their WooCommerce site. These required:

  • A new product template with support for multiple variations.
  • Pre-order functionality via the WooCommerce Pre-Orders plugin.
  • Cart validation rules to prevent mixing pre-orders with standard products.
  • A potential waitlist feature for when products went out of stock.

Complicating matters, the staging site was built with a Full Site Editing (FSE) theme, which uses block-based .html templates. The live site ran on Astra, which uses PHP-based templates. This meant templates could not be reused directly.

Diagnosis

During testing, several issues emerged:

  1. Template migration hurdles
FSE templates stored as wp_template posts in the database could not be simply exported/imported into Astra. Manual copying of blocks wasn’t feasible; alternative migration strategies were needed.
  2. Pre-order plugin limitations
The official WooCommerce Pre-Orders plugin only allowed a single pre-order product per cart. Attempts to override this behavior with custom snippets caused inconsistent behavior, like clearing carts unexpectedly.
  3. Avalara address validation conflicts
Avalara Avatax was adding an extra validation button to checkout, creating confusion. Removing it wasn’t straightforward without removing validation entirely.
  4. Plugin reliability concerns
The WooCommerce Pre-Orders plugin had poor reviews and was causing performance issues (including memory leaks). Alternative plugins such as YITH Pre-Order for WooCommerce and Addify Advanced Pre-Order and Backorder were reviewed for stability and better feature support.

Resolution Steps

Our team worked through the following solutions:

  • Product migration: Instead of direct template export, we manually rebuilt product pages on the live site using WooCommerce’s product editor, keeping them private until they matched staging. This allowed safe testing without disrupting live customers.
  • Cart validation snippet: A custom WooCommerce hook (woocommerce_add_to_cart_validation) was introduced to block carts containing both pre-orders and in-stock items, while still allowing multiple pre-orders of the same release date.
  • Pre-order plugin evaluation: We tested multiple pre-order plugins. YITH Pre-Order Pro ultimately supported multiple pre-orders per cart and allowed configuration of mixed-cart restrictions, though client testing was required for fulfillment flows.
  • Avalara integration: After confirming the extra checkout button came from Avalara, we documented its necessity (address validation was required for compliance) and advised keeping it in place until Avalara’s settings could be customized further.

Final Outcome

The client successfully launched their new WooCommerce products with:

  • Pre-orders enabled and validated properly.
  • A cart experience that prevented conflicts between pre-orders and standard items.
  • A migration path for FSE templates that avoided data loss or broken layouts.

Although the WooCommerce Pre-Orders plugin presented limitations, alternative solutions were identified and tested. The client ultimately chose to pursue customization to better align with their fulfillment needs.
