Reorganizing WordPress categories and migrating posts with 301 redirects

When a website grows, its content structure often needs to be reorganized for better usability and SEO. Recently, our team completed a project where we streamlined categories, migrated posts between content types, and implemented redirects to ensure no SEO value was lost.

Issue Background

A WordPress site had accumulated multiple content types with overlapping or inconsistent category structures. Specifically:

  • The site used both the default Posts CPT (News) and a custom Stories CPT.
  • Categories were duplicated or inconsistent across content types.
  • Some posts needed to be migrated from News to Stories.
  • Old categories and parent slugs (like “Portfolio”) needed to be consolidated and redirected.

This caused confusion for both site administrators and visitors, and risked hurting SEO performance.

Diagnosis

Our team reviewed the content organization and identified key problems:

  • Duplicate categories – News and Stories had overlapping taxonomies that weren’t aligned.
  • Improper imports – Previous import/export work had left categories mismatched or missing.
  • SEO concerns – Without proper 301 redirects, restructuring would break existing URLs and lose search rankings.

To address these, we planned a structured migration with cleanup and redirects.

Resolution Steps

Here’s how we executed the restructuring:

  1. Defined new category structure
    – Consolidated Stories CPT categories down to four:
    – Donors
    – Researchers
    – Scholarship
    – Videos
  2. Migrated posts between CPTs
    – Identified News posts that belonged under Stories.
    – Wrote and ran a migration script to bulk move posts from News → Stories while preserving content and metadata.
    – Ensured migrated posts were assigned to the correct new categories.
  3. Cleaned up categories
    – Removed outdated or duplicate categories that were no longer needed.
    – Verified all content was mapped to the new structure.
  4. Implemented 301 redirects
    – Added redirects to handle old category and post URLs.
    – Ensured that legacy links (like those pointing to “Portfolio”) properly redirected to their new Stories CPT equivalents.
  5. Validation
    – Checked frontend categories for accuracy.
    – Confirmed all old URLs redirected correctly.
    – Ensured that SEO integrity and internal navigation were preserved.

Final Outcome

The site now has a clean and logical content structure:

  • The News CPT houses news and press releases.
  • The Stories CPT contains donor stories, researcher profiles, scholarships, and videos.
  • All outdated categories were removed.
  • 301 redirects ensure that no SEO value was lost, and old links remain functional.

This restructuring not only improved content organization but also enhanced user experience and safeguarded search engine performance.
