Security Alert Summary
The Contextual Related Posts plugin for WordPress contains a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the block handling of the other_attributes parameter. Authenticated users with author-level access or higher can inject scripts that will execute when a visitor or other user opens an affected page, due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping.
CVE Details

CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N - Authentication / privileges / user interaction: Requires authenticated attacker with low privileges (author-level or above); user interaction: none
- Primary impact: Confidentiality: Low; Integrity: Low; Availability: None
- CWE / weakness: CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation)
Technical Details
The vulnerability is a stored cross-site scripting issue caused by insufficient input sanitization and missing output escaping for the block parameter named other_attributes. When an authenticated user with author-level privileges or higher supplies malicious content via this parameter, that content can be stored by the plugin and later rendered into pages without proper escaping, allowing arbitrary script execution in the context of visitors or other users viewing the affected page.
The issue arises in the plugin’s block handling and frontend output paths where other_attributes is processed and printed. The raw injection persists on the site and is executed by the browser when the page is loaded, enabling typical XSS impacts such as session theft or actions performed in the victim’s context, limited to what the page and user privileges allow.
How This Could Impact Your Website
Consider a small editorial team where a site owner, internal staff editors, and an external contributor all have accounts. If a contributor or an editor with author-level access can add or edit content that uses the plugin’s block and supplies hostile content in the other_attributes parameter, that script can execute for any user who views the affected page.
- Internal user data visible on pages could be exposed, including names and email addresses displayed on injected pages.
- Attackers could use visible information to craft targeted phishing or social engineering campaigns against staff or subscribers.
- Visitors with elevated privileges (editors, administrators) who view an injected page could have actions performed on their behalf within the limits of their session and capabilities.
If youre unsure whether your site is affected or how to assess your current user roles and plugins, it may be worth having a professional review your setup.
Recommended Actions
- Update the affected plugin as soon as a patched version is available.
- Review and reduce unnecessary user roles, especially contributor and author roles that can create or edit content with blocks.
- Enforce strong passwords and two-factor authentication for editors and administrators.
- Remove unused or unmaintained plugins to reduce attack surface.
- Monitor site activity and logs for unusual behavior or unexpected content changes in posts and blocks.
