How to fix event venue issues in WordPress when all events show the wrong location

Managing events in WordPress should be simple, but sometimes small missteps can cause major headaches. One common issue occurs when editing event venues: instead of updating just one event, all events suddenly display the wrong location.

This guide walks through why this happens and how to correctly update venues without accidentally overwriting them across your site.

Issue background

A client reported that after adding a new event, nearly all of their events suddenly showed that same venue instead of the original venue they had assigned.

It turned out that when they edited the “Venue” field, the update applied to all events linked to that venue post. This created confusion and made it appear as though all past and future events had been assigned the wrong location.

Diagnosis

During testing, we noticed two ways to manage venue information on event posts:

  1. Edit venue (sidebar option) – This edits the shared venue post itself. If you change details here (like the address), every event using that venue will be updated.
  2. Remove venue (block option) – This disconnects the venue from a single event. You can then assign a different venue without affecting other events.

The problem arose because the client used the “Edit venue” option when they actually intended to assign a new venue.

Additionally, there were multiple venues set up in the system, which added to the confusion when assigning them across events.

Resolution steps

To avoid changing every event location at once:

  1. Check existing venues
Navigate to your list of venues and confirm whether you have duplicates. Consolidate them if necessary to reduce errors.
  2. Use “Remove venue” instead of “Edit venue”
If you want to change the location for a single event, click Remove venue inside the block editor. Then, assign the correct venue from the dropdown list or create a new one. This ensures you only affect that single event.
  3. Reserve “Edit venue” for true global updates
Only use the sidebar “Edit venue” option when you intend to update all events linked to that venue—for example, if your physical address changes.
  4. Duplicate events for efficiency
If you frequently host similar events, use the “Duplicate” function (if available) to create a new event with the correct venue already assigned. This reduces the risk of accidentally overwriting venue data.

Final outcome

By clarifying the difference between editing a venue and removing/reassigning a venue, the client was able to properly manage event locations. Future events could now be created without overwriting past ones, and venue data stayed consistent across the calendar.
