How to enable Venmo payments in WooCommerce with PayPal Checkout

Venmo is one of the fastest-growing payment methods in the U.S., especially for mobile-first users. If your WooCommerce store already uses PayPal, you may be able to accept Venmo payments without creating a separate Venmo account. We recently implemented this setup for a client who wanted Venmo purchases to flow directly into their existing PayPal account.

Here’s how we made it work.

Issue Background

The client’s requirements were:

  • Add Venmo as a payment option.
  • Ensure that all Venmo payments were deposited directly into their PayPal account.
  • Avoid managing a separate Venmo account.

They were already using WooCommerce with PayPal for checkout, but Venmo was not showing up as an option at checkout.

Diagnosis

Our investigation confirmed:

  • Venmo only works with the PayPal Checkout integration (Smart Payment Buttons), not with older PayPal Standard or legacy integrations.
  • The merchant does not need a Venmo account; payments processed via Venmo are deposited directly into PayPal like any other transaction.
  • Venmo will only appear as a payment option when:
    • The site uses PayPal Checkout with Smart Buttons enabled.
    • The customer is on a mobile device or browser that supports Venmo.

Resolution Steps

To enable Venmo:

  1. Verified PayPal Checkout setup: Confirmed that WooCommerce was using the PayPal Checkout plugin with Smart Buttons enabled.
  2. Enabled Venmo in PayPal settings: Navigated to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments → PayPal. Ensured that Venmo was toggled on within the Smart Button payment methods.
  3. Tested in staging: Placed test orders using a Venmo-enabled mobile device. Verified that Venmo appeared alongside PayPal as a payment option.
  4. Validated deposits: Completed a test order and confirmed the funds were deposited into the PayPal account. No separate Venmo account was required.

Final Outcome

With Venmo enabled:

  • Customers checking out on mobile can now pay directly with Venmo.
  • All funds are deposited into the PayPal account automatically.
  • The store benefits from offering a popular mobile-first payment option with no additional accounts to manage.

By enabling Venmo through PayPal Checkout, Freshy helped streamline the payment experience for mobile users while keeping management simple for the merchant.
