How-to guide: Fixing Elementor editor not loading due to container feature conflict

At Freshy, we frequently help WordPress site owners troubleshoot Elementor-related errors. In this case, we resolved an issue where the Elementor editor would not load when editing a specific draft home page, caused by a conflict with the Container feature and specific Elementor elements.

Issue Background

The client reported that when attempting to edit their draft homepage using Elementor, the editor would not load. They noticed this issue specifically on a test homepage, while the live homepage loaded—though slowly.

Initial troubleshooting indicated a potential conflict with Elementor’s Experiments & Features settings or specific content elements within the page. The client had already made significant content changes on the draft homepage, so rebuilding from scratch was not ideal.

Diagnosis

Our investigation revealed the following:

  1. Elementor Experiments & Features Settings: The site’s Elementor settings included various “Experiments & Features” options. Multiple tests were run with these features set to Default, Inactive, and Active, but none successfully enabled the draft homepage editor to load.
  2. Container Feature Conflict: Disabling the Container feature allowed the editor to load but removed all content from the draft homepage. Enabling the feature restored content but caused the editor to fail on the draft page.
  3. Specific Elementor Element Conflict: Further troubleshooting isolated the issue to the Icon List element, a standard Elementor widget. Disabling the Icon List in Elementor → Element Manager allowed the editor to load correctly.

Resolution Steps

  1. Testing on Staging Site: We cloned the site to a staging environment to safely perform troubleshooting and tests.
  2. Feature Isolation: Through process of elimination, we determined that disabling the Container feature restored editor functionality but removed page content.
  3. Element Conflict Identification: We identified the Icon List element as the root cause of the conflict. Disabling the Icon List widget resolved the editor loading issue without affecting other page content.
  4. Final Implementation: We disabled the Icon List on both staging and live environments. Verified that the Elementor editor now loaded correctly on both the draft and live homepage. The editor remained slightly slow but fully functional.

Final Outcome

The Elementor editor loading issue was fully resolved.

  • Elementor editor now loads correctly for both the live and test homepage.
  • No loss of content on the test homepage.
  • Editor speed improved but may still experience some lag due to page complexity.

Key Technical Takeaways

  • Elementor Feature Conflicts: The Container feature and experimental settings can conflict with certain page elements.
  • Widget-Level Debugging: Isolating and disabling specific Elementor widgets (like Icon List) can resolve page editing issues without requiring a full rebuild.
  • Staging Environment Testing: Always test configuration changes in a staging environment to avoid impacting the live site.
  • Editor Performance: Complex page content can contribute to Elementor editor lag; even after resolving feature conflicts, optimization may be needed.
