Move Over System Fonts… A New Serif Is In Town

Typography has come a long way since Gutenberg’s days. You can say the same about typography used on the web. If you’ve used a computer for any short period of time, you’re probably familiar with the names ‘Georgia,’ ‘Verdana,’ ‘Arial,’ ‘Helvetica’ and ‘Times New Roman.’ In the mid-1990s, websites were limited to these system fonts.

Once Cascading Style Sheets, a.k.a. “CSS,” came into the picture, it opened up a plethora of type options.

With the help of Adobe, by acquiring Typekit, Google’s launch of Google Fonts in 2010, and a handful of other type foundries, web designers were provided the accessibility to high-quality fonts.

If you’re new to web fonts, Google Fonts is a perfect place to start. Google Fonts’ approach is “making the web more beautiful, fast, and open through great typography.”

Best of all, Google Fonts is free and offers almost 900 web font families to choose from!

Typography can add a lot of personality to your website and is an excellent way to provide a quick refresh to your site as well. You may find yourself a bit overwhelmed with your options. Luckily, Google Fonts has a step-by-step guide just for you.

So, what are you waiting for…find something that’s just your type!
