Google Analytics Account: Transferring Analytics Property

This step-by-step guide will help you transfer/convert a Google Analytics Property away from an Organization Account, and into a non-Organization Account. Normally, this wouldn’t be such an undertaking.

However, if you utilize the Organization functionality/feature of Google Analytics 360 — which is part of the Google Marketing Platform — this can be a bit tricky. This means, all of your Accounts (and thus the Properties within those Accounts) are likely “linked” to your Organization.

We’ve had requests from clients who wish to have their website’s Property moved to their own Account, rather than our own Organization Account.

Currently, it is not possible to transfer a Property that is linked to an Organization into an Account that is not already part of that Organization.

Therefore, we need to:

1. Create a separate temporary Account that is linked to our Organization.
2. Then move the Property into that temporary Account.
3. Then remove that temporary Account from our Organization.
4. Then, and only then, can you now transfer the desired Property to a non-Organization Account (the client’s account).

So, let’s begin…

Before starting, it’s best if your client adds your email address as a user with all permissions to their own Analytics Account (at the Account level of User Management) so you can transfer the Property into their Account.

Then, log in as your own user…

Create a test/dummy analytics account
and ensure it’s part of the Organization

1. Open Analytics.
2. Create a test/dummy Analytics Account.
3. Log into Marketing Platform to see if that test/dummy Account is in the Organization.
4. Platform Tools > Administration
5. Organization (Tab)
6. Find test/dummy Account
7. Link Accounts
8. Destination organization > [select your Organization name]
9. Accounts to link > choose the test/dummy Account (that isn’t yet in the Organization)
10. Link > Link Account

Your temporary Account is now part of the Organization!

Move the desired Property
into that test/dummy Account

1. Open Analytics.
2. Search/find the desired Analytics Property and click into it (may need to refresh until you see it).
3. Admin > Property Settings > Move Property
4. Select a destination account > choose the test/dummy Account (that is now in the Organization).
5. Confirm changes > Start move > Go to home

Your Property is now within your temporary Account!

Change the test/dummy Account
to unlink from Organization

1. Open Marketing Platform.
2. Platform Tools > Administration
3. Organizations (tab) > [click into your Organization]
4. Products (aka Linked Accounts) > Analytics
5. Click the checkbox (Analytics icon) of the test/dummy Account.
6. Unlink > Unlink

Your temporary Account is now removed from your Organization!

Move the desired Property out of the test/dummy Account
and into the client’s actual Account

1. Open Analytics.
2. Search/find the desired Analytics Property (within test/dummy Account) and click into it (may need to refresh until you see it).
3. Admin > Property Settings > Move Property
4. Select a destination account > choose the test/dummy Account (that is now in the Organization).
5. Confirm changes > Start move > Go to home

Your Property is now within the desired Account!

The desired Property is now moved within the client’s Account

1. Confirm this is the case in Analytics.
2. Admin > Account > Choose client’s Account
3. Property > check if desired Property is there.
4. Click it and choose Property Settings.
5. Confirm the Tracking ID is correct.

The client now has that Property in their Account!
