Warming Up the Internet
The internet, by its very nature, is a kind of cold and impersonal place. It is a virtual reality, it’s not made out of real, physical things–so it is by nature not as warm and personal as real life. There have definitely been a lot of steps to make it less impersonal over the years, especially through social media. However, there are still a lot of things about the internet that scare many people and keep them from either using it at all, or using it well. And if they own or operate a business, they might not have a website or even an e-mail address because they don’t want to bother with the internet. It’s a foreign country to them, and they don’t know the language or any of the customs, so they’d rather just stay in familiar territory.
Now if someone doesn’t want to bother with the internet, I can understand that. However, it doesn’t eliminate the fact that they might need an internet-related service or product at some point. If they are a business owner, a website might really help them, and most people know this. But they might just feel overwhelmed at the prospect of using one, let alone creating one. They might know that it could benefit them to have an e-mail address for customers or potential customers to contact them, but they don’t even know where or how to begin setting that up either. And so we end up with lots and lots of great businesses with no web presence. This is a very unfortunate situation, because the internet is actually a great resource and can help grow a business exponentially if it is used effectively.
The process of warming up the internet is founded on the principle that the internet is run by real human beings. People need to know this. But if they’ve never worked with a real human being in connection with the internet, then they might not. That is why customer service is so important, particularly online or in relation to internet-based products and/or services.
