This past Friday night, I went to a Binghamton Mets (a.k.a. B-Mets) game at NYSEG stadium in downtown Binghamton with my family. It had been a while since I had gone to a game, so I wasn’t really sure what it would be like. We had such an amazing time, and the whole experience made me realize, once again, how much I love it here. Let me tell you why.
First of all, the stadium was packed. It was awesome to see such a great turnout. There was a wide variety of people there, from families to groups of college students to senior citizens. Everyone seemed to be having a genuinely great time and no one (at least no one that I could see) was getting out of hand. It was one of those beautiful, upstate New York summer nights, still warm, but not too hot–perfect for a baseball game.
There was something so encouraging about the fact that pretty much everyone in that stadium was cheering for our hometown. People of all ages were sporting their B-Mets gear, proud to show their support of our team. Sure, there are plenty of things that our area could improve upon, but that night, it didn’t matter to any of us. We wanted to see Binghamton win, and every little positive thing that happened in the game got a huge cheer from the crowd.
Something that I love about this area is the fact that you can have a great time without spending a ton of money. Tickets to the game are very inexpensive, and once you’re there, you can still get a hot dog for under 2 dollars. The spiedies from the Lupo’s stand are $5 each, also not a bad price. All in all, you’ll walk out of there with a little extra cash left in your pocket, which feels pretty good.
It was also really great to see all of the local businesses that were represented that night, whether it was through the billboards at the back of the stadium or in little giveaways that were going on throughout the game. The B-Mets game is a really great place to advertise, and so many businesses are taking advantage of that opportunity.
If an out-of-towner came to a B-Mets game, I think they would leave with a very positive feeling about Binghamton. It would come across as a place where the people have a lot of hometown pride, a place where people like to support local businesses, a place where you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to have a great night out with your family or friends. I think I knew all of those things were true before I went to the game the other night, but I’m so glad I went because it reminded me of the reasons why I love living here so much.
Just in case you didn’t already know, our beloved B-Mets made it into the playoffs this year! The first playoff game is this Friday, September 6th, vs. the Trenton Thunder, right here at NYSEG stadium. If Friday night doesn’t work for you, game 2 is going to be Saturday night, and both of these games will be followed by fireworks!
